The day arrived! Woke up early, got all my stuff, Kyle drove me the short drive into town to drop me off then returned, woke the kids and they walked into town to catch the 7:00 ferry over to Madeline Island where they'd meet me after I swam across.
You can really tell how hazy it was in these photos. AQI still high.
Waiting at the start with 500+ other swimmers. Here is one of my lane mates from masters swimming.
And more swimming buddies:
Picture of the three of us - first timers at point to la point.
And we're off - Kyle captured this from the ferry.
Kyle and kids waiting at the finish as we all swam across.
It was pretty amazing. There were orange buoys all along the swim route and a red buoy marked the center/half way point. It was all pretty exciting and hard to keep my head down at first. I just wanted to look around and the waves were keeping me on edge as well. Once I hit the halfway point my neck had started hurting from rubbing on my wet suit and I had to force myself to just relax, ride the waves with each stroke and keep my head down. Once I was able to do that it was amazing. The water was so clear. In the end I know I could have gone faster, but that wasn't really the goal, the goal was to do it and enjoy it. And I did. I'm not planning to do it again, not for a few years at least but I will say Lake Superior is my FAVORITE place to swim.
Once I finished we walked into town. Madeline island is a TINY town, not much to eat at 9 in the morning.
The town which is walkable from the ferry. The island had a lot of sights and a state park, but not close enough to walk to.
We walked back toward the private residence where the race ended so I could get a drone view of the course I just swam.
Then we hopped the ferry back to the main land.
Once being on the ferry it hit me must how far I swam. Pretty amazing.
